UET Chemistry Department Showcases Eco-Innovations at Final-Year Project Display

The Department of Chemistry, University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, under the esteemed leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir and the visionary guidance of Prof. Dr. Farhat Yasmeen, who emphasizes developing environment-friendly effective local products and promoting an entrepreneurial culture among students, organized a Final-year project display. The project and poster presentation let students present their creative ideas and skills.

The project demonstrated students' ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, resulting in eco-friendly items that benefit the environment.

Project Highlights

Group 1: Sustainable Jelly Development (Supervised by Dr. Arjumand Iqbal Durrani) Developed a functional jelly using fish scale biowaste, promoting sustainability and supporting SDG 3 and SDG 12. The jelly is nutritionally enriched and designed for teenage girls.

Group 2: Indigo Blue Dye (Supervised by Dr. Aisha Munawar) Explored the properties of indigo blue dye, highlighting its vibrant color, good affinity for natural fibers, and moderate to good fastness.

Group 3: Bioplastic from Potato Peel (Supervised by Dr. Aneela Anwar) Developed a sustainable bioplastic product from potato peel starch, offering a promising solution for reducing plastic pollution in Pakistan.

Group 4: Natural Face Wash (Supervised by Dr. Iqra Muneer) Formulated a face wash for oily and acne-prone skin using natural ingredients, with the orange peel variant showing the best performance.

Group 5: Superabsorbent Hydrogels (Supervised by Dr. Humayun Ajaz) Developed poly(acrylic acid)-based superabsorbent hydrogels for water absorption applications in agriculture, supporting sustainable agriculture and aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Group 6: Eco-Friendly Sunscreen (Supervised by Dr. Zahoor Ahmed) Formulated a sunscreen using Zn-HAp derived from eggshell waste, demonstrating strong UV protection and good skin compatibility.

Group 7: Polyherbal Handwash (Supervised by Ms Hina Saleem) Polyherbal handwash is formulated using extracts like Neem, Tulsi, and Tea Tree Oil, offering strong antimicrobial protection. It gently cleanses without harsh chemicals, keeping hands soft, healthy, and fragrant.

Group 8: Eco-Friendly Detergent (Supervised by Mr. Asad Abbas) An eco-friendly liquid detergent was developed as a biodegradable, non-toxic, and skin-safe alternative to synthetic detergents. Tests like FTIR, foam stability, viscosity, pH, and cleaning efficiency confirmed its quality, safety, and sustainability. The Department of Chemistry UET, Lahore continues to foster a culture of research and development, encouraging students to think creatively and develop practical solutions.
